Finish

P1065-EG — electro-galvanized, zinc plating to ASTM B633 Type III SC1. Smooth bright silver. Indoor and dry service. P1065-HG — hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 or A153. Visible spangle, heavier edge build-up. Outdoor, wet and coastal service. P1065-PL — plain, uncoated steel. For painting or powder coating after assembly, or dry enclosed runs. Stainless — the catalog offers stainless, aluminum and fiberglass on some part numbers but publishes no standard suffix for them and says to consult the factory. Quote as made-to-order. Powder-coated — powder coating to a customer-specified RAL color. Not a catalog finish, so it carries no catalog code — the color, which parts take it and the film build are confirmed at quotation. We publish no film thickness and no salt-spray figure, because we have not measured one.

Finish list: Unistrut® General Engineering Catalog no. 17, p. 85 — finishes note. Powder coating is our option, not a catalog finish. The catalog also lists GR against this series — not quoted, see Finishes.

Pack: Packed per order. Two cap screws and two channel nuts per plate, ordered separately.

Tapped variantnot publishedP1065 is drilled. The tapped plates on the same p. 90 are separate part numbers with their own 3/8 in. thickness note.

The three hole figures come from the p. 90 header note rather than from the P1065 drawing, and they check against the drawing: 13/16 + 1-7/8 + 13/16 in. is exactly the 3-1/2 in. overall length printed on it. That is a useful property of this part — the length itself tells you whether the punching is on the series pattern.

What bolts through it, and where the published data stops.

Hardware. Two 1/2 x 15/16 in. hex head cap screws and two 1/2 in. channel nuts — P1010, P4010 or P5510 by channel depth. Not supplied with the plate.

Where it goes. Flat on the open face, bridging a joint between two channels that are in the same plane: two lengths butted end to end, or a diagonal brace landing on a run. It is not a fitting for two channels at right angles to each other — that is a bent angle, not a flat plate.

Twist. Two bolts in a line resist rotation about the plate, which is the point of the two-hole version; one bolt in each channel does not. On a butt splice the plate is carrying the joint in shear through two bolts and the connection is only as good as the nuts under it, so use the correct nut for the channel depth and tighten both.

Load rating. The catalog publishes no load figure for P1065, so neither do we. A splice is the connection where an assumed rating does the most damage: if the run is carrying anything that matters, have the joint checked rather than inferred.

A published cross-reference number is one thing only: a number a cited document prints opposite this one, as a candidate substitute in the same catalog slot. It carries no load rating, steel grade, coating thickness or third-party listing — each manufacturer publishes those separately and they do not travel with a part number. Source documents, access dates and what to measure before you fit a substitute: Unistrut P1065 cross reference.

What a P1065 actually is

A rectangle of steel plate, as wide as the channel and 3-1/2 in. long, with two holes punched on the standard 1-7/8 in. centers of the series. There is no bend, no gusset and no weld; it is the flat two-hole member of the plate family and it is what most people mean when they say “splice plate” about strut.

Because the holes sit on the same pitch as the punching in T-series channel and the same pitch as the two-hole fittings, the plate lines up with anything else on the series pattern. That is the whole design: one pitch, 1-7/8 in., running through the punched channel, the fittings and this plate, so parts from different corners of the catalog land on the same bolt centers.

Choosing between P1065 and what sits next to it

The one-hole square plate, P1064, clamps a single item to a single channel. P1065 ties two things together. If you are tempted to use two P1064s in place of one P1065, the difference is that the single plate cannot stop the two channels rotating relative to each other, because each plate is pinned by one bolt.

Where the two channels meet at a right angle out of plane, none of the flat plates is the answer — that is P1026 or another bent angle. Where they meet in plane at a corner and the joint has to resist opening, the catalog's four-hole gusset plate P1962 is the heavier option.

For a butt splice in a run that carries anything, remember what a splice does: it moves the whole load path through two bolts and a plate. Two plates, one on each face where the channel geometry allows it, is the standard way of making that joint less dependent on a single set of lips.

Checking an incoming shipment

Four checks, and the second is the one that matters most.

1. Measure the overall length: 3-1/2 in. (88.9 mm). A rule is enough. On this part the length is also a punching check, because the catalog pattern makes 13/16 + 1-7/8 + 13/16 in. add exactly to the overall length.

2. Measure hole center to hole center: 1-7/8 in. (47.6 mm). Measure between the same edge of each hole if you have no center punch — edge to matching edge equals center to center. Get this wrong and neither bolt lands cleanly in a nut, and a plate that is a sixteenth out will still bolt up on a bench and will not on a run.

3. Caliper the thickness and compare it with the thickness on your quotation. Anywhere; the plate is flat. The tapped group on the same catalog page is 3/8 in. thick, so a plate that measures thick is not necessarily wrong — it is probably a different part number. Our standard plate is about 0.23 in. (5.8 mm) base steel before coating; a hot-dip galvanized part measures thicker. The catalog reference part is 1/4 in. (6.4 mm). Compare the base-steel thickness on your quotation; measure a galvanized part knowing the coating adds to it. A 3/16 in. (4.8 mm) plate looks the same in a bin — that is the one to reject.

4. Measure the width: 1-5/8 in. (41.3 mm). It must match the channel face so the plate bears on both lips.

Then, before it goes into stock, check the finish matches the run it is going into — a plain plate bolted into a galvanized splice outdoors is the first thing on the job to rust, and it is sitting at the joint.

What we can quote against this part number

We do not manufacture these parts and we are not Unistrut. We source them. The item we can quote against Unistrut P1065 is flat plate fitting, 3-1/2 x 1-5/8 in., two 9/16 in. holes — a candidate substitute made to order by a contract manufacturer, offered for inquiry, not an original-manufacturer part.

These are the published Unistrut catalog dimensions we build to, each with the page it is printed on. The thickness row is the exception: it states what we supply, not a catalog figure. They are geometry only. No load, torque or listing figure is claimed for our part: none has been tested on it, and a figure published for a Unistrut part is evidence about that part, not about ours.
